Whakarewarewa Forest (The Redwoods)

Stumbling upon the Whakarewarewa Forest (frequently referred to by its English name The Redwoods) will make you feel as though you’ve been teleported into Northern California. Giant Redwood trees cover 6 hectares of land in Rotorua, providing a home for numerous hiking and biking trails often used by the locals for their daily workout. There are plenty of short and longer walks to choose from.
Lake Tikitapu (Blue Lake)

A beautiful and easy walk around the tranquil shores of Lake Tikitapu (also known by its English name Blue Lake) makes for a simple jaunt for the whole family. Don’t miss a stop at Blue and Green Lakes view post for the perfect vantage point both of Lake Tikitapu and Lake Rotokakahi (Green Lake). On a sunny day the sapphire and emerald hue of both lakes is striking.
Hamurana Springs Walk
30 mins, 1.6km
Just a 15-min drive outside Rotorua, a walk along the tranquil waters of the Hamurana Springs will bring you in contact with gorgeous views and many bird species. This easy walk is suitable for all ages.
Okere Falls Track
30 minutes 1 way, 1.2 km
A lovely nature walk with stunning views of the Kaituna River and waterfalls. This area was the site of New Zealand’s first hydroelectric power station. It is also steeped in Māori history.
