The best short hikes near Rotorua, New Zealand

The wealth of attractions and accommodation options make Rotorua a great spot to use as a base to explore New Zealand’s north island. There are countless activities available in the city of Rotorua, but if you’re looking to immerse yourself in a bit of nature, try hitting up one of these great trails.

Whakarewarewa Forest (The Redwoods)
30 mins, 2km (and longer)

Stumbling upon the Whakarewarewa Forest (frequently referred to by its English name The Redwoods) will make you feel as though you’ve been teleported into Northern California. Giant Redwood trees cover 6 hectares of land in Rotorua, providing a home for numerous hiking and biking trails often used by the locals for their daily workout. There are plenty of short and longer walks to choose from.

Lake Tikitapu (Blue Lake)
1hr 30 mins, 5.5km

A beautiful and easy walk around the tranquil shores of Lake Tikitapu (also known by its English name Blue Lake) makes for a simple jaunt for the whole family. Don’t miss a stop at Blue and Green Lakes view post for the perfect vantage point both of Lake Tikitapu and Lake Rotokakahi (Green Lake). On a sunny day the sapphire and emerald hue of both lakes is striking.

Hamurana Springs Walk

Just a 15-min drive outside Rotorua, a walk along the tranquil waters of the Hamurana Springs will bring you in contact with gorgeous views and many bird species. This easy walk is suitable for all ages.

Nature walk. Visit #hamuranasprings when you are in #rotorua. I was told 25 minutes to complete the circuit of redwoods and river walk. We did it within 1 hour with the kids, including short lunch break nasi goreng. Just drive to the golf course carpark. Free entry, easy & short walk. What not to love.

Okere Falls Track
30 minutes 1 way, 1.2 km

A lovely nature walk with stunning views of the Kaituna River and waterfalls. This area was the site of New Zealand’s first hydroelectric power station. It is also steeped in Māori history.

Okay, last waterfall photo for a little while. How amazing is this place though!
